If you are a European citizen, you only need your valid ID card or passport. It is also advisable to carry the vehicle’s registration certificate, compulsory insurance and the European Health Insurance Card for medical care.
There is no single environmental badge like in France or Germany, but there are Limited Traffic Zones (ZTLs), especially in cities. Prior authorization is usually required to access them. Avoid entering without permission: fines come even from abroad.
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) offer mild temperatures, fewer crowds and spectacular scenery. In summer, mountainous areas are ideal for escaping the heat, while in winter some routes may be affected by snow.
