Insurance on Self-Driving Rental Motorhomes

There are different types of insurance to take into account when we travel with our rental motorhome that will make us enjoy the experience in a more relaxed and worry-free way. We explain each of them so that in your opinion you can hire the ones that seem necessary in your case, and you know how they work.

1. Comprehensive Insurance with Excess

This is the general policy for any motorhome rental, and it is the one that all insurance companies offer to professionals. Unlike the private customer who is allowed to insure his motorhome without excess.

What is the Insurance Excess?

In comprehensive insurance there is the possibility of taking out insurance with or without excess. The fact of contracting with an excess makes the value of the insurance policy to be paid lower, but in return, we will be responsible for part of the damages.

The insurance excess is a fixed maximum amount that must be paid to the insurance company in order for it to repair a blow in our vehicle. It is important to clarify that the deductible is paid for the repair of each of the blows individually.

Insurers usually offer different excess amounts at the time of taking out the policy and this commitment is annual.

How an insurance excess works

Once an accident occurs in our motorhome and it is our fault or there is no opponent, we have to contact the insurance company. They will go to the workshop to have a repair budget, which will be agreed with the company’s expert.

From here, there are two options. If the repair value is less than the excess value, we will have to pay in full. On the other hand, if the repair value is higher, we will only pay the excess value.

What is the deposit when you hire a motorhome

The deposit is an amount that must be deposited at the time of hiring a motorhome in order to cover the cost of the excess in case the insurance must be used to repair the vehicle.

Usually this amount is usually the same amount as the excess, so depending on whether it has been contracted with the insurer it will have one value or another.

Example: Our company insures all motorhomes with a Comprehensive insurance with an excess of €900, so the client is asked to deposit a deposit by bank card of €900 at the time of picking up the motorhome. If we have a mishap where its repair to the original state is valued at 200€, this amount will be subtracted from the deposit, and the difference of 700€ will be returned to the client. If the repair costs exceed €900, the customer will not be asked to pay anything more. But if another blow is suffered, the same procedure will be used and the customer will be required to pay another deposit of €900 to cover the repair costs of the second blow.

2. Roadside Assistance

There are two types of roadside assistance, the assistance offered by the motorhome insurance company, and the assistance offered by the official motorhome warranty.

Insurance Company Roadside Assistance

The roadside assistance service covers all the countries indicated in the insurance company’s Green Card.

If travel assistance is required, it is mandatory to request it from the insurance company. Actions taken personally that have not been approved by the insurance company are not covered.

Support for the official warranty

We have an extensive network of workshops of the official motorhome brand throughout Europe available in case of a breakdown. We will also have assistance in the workshops of the manufacturer of the engine and chassis of the vehicle, in our case Fiat or Ford.

3. Insurance on the excess.

If you want to travel more calmly and not suffer if you lose one or more deposits, we recommend taking out a specific policy.

This type of insurance is optional and is responsible for insuring possible losses of bail either partially or totally. It even covers the loss of more than one bail in case of having several blows. It’s a good way to limit your expenses in the event of an accident.

How much does this type of insurance cost? We currently have an agreement with an insurance company at a cost of approximately €10/day. Depending on the number of days, it may even be a lower cost.
